Gaia "Gaia, 10/19/05"
Charcoal on Bristol Paper
22" x 24"

"I was daydreaming paintings and having a particularly vivid time of it. I visualized an standing figure emerging from a deep green light. (There's more to the image.) She continued to pop up into my consciousness repeatedly over the course of the next four days. I was pretty clear on the image but could not figure out who or what it was. The answer came to me in a moment of clarity when all of the pieces seemed to fall together. She was the Earth!

The moment thrilled me and I did this very fast sketch in a matter of minutes. Not as a depiction of what I saw, but rather as a response to the realization of what I had been gifted.

Still it took more careful thought about what I should call what I'd drawn. I decided that the best reference I had was the concept of Gaia, the earth goddess. So that's what I called this.

The symbol of the oval with the line through it was, and is not clear in its meaning. Although I surmise it stands for her origins in the Central Universe."
