William H. Hays  Hello and Welcome Friends,

Despite the fact that I've not been able to produce a great deal of new artwork, I have news to pass along to you this month.

First, we were surprised to find our bed and breakfast included in Yankee Magazine's "Best of New England" current issue. About us, they said, "How could you not be inspired by a stay at William Hays' Brattleboro Gallery, where guests are invited into a suite loaded with world-art tchotchkes and a view of the Connecticut River? Amble into Hays' studio next door to chat about his landscapes." Even with just one, two-room suite to offer, we were one of five lodgings in Vermont named this year. Pretty good, huh?

This June marks the 20th year that we've had The Artist's Loft studio and gallery on Main Street. On Thursday, June 3rd we're having an anniversary reception with food and drink for all to celebrate from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. I've been a busy bee preparing for this event (followed the next night with Gallery Walk, also 5:30 to 8:30 PM, and then the Strolling of the Heifers Parade on Saturday.) So it's a good weekend to visit Brattleboro and The Artist's Loft. Bring a friend!

As for artwork, I do have a few things to share with you. First is a print. Since the last print was thirteen colors (OH MY!), I took a vacation and did a one-color print of the view from my gallery window looking on Main and Elliot Streets in Brattleboro. The image came from one morning when I woke up very early and saw the full moon setting behind the church steeple.

Next is a commissioned painting that I've been working on lately. It has been slow going. But that's the way it goes sometimes. The following images are the first four stages of the painting of Carters Beach in Nova Scotia. What you're seeing is almost entirely underpainting and will be more influential than visible in the completed painting. But I hope you'll find this glimpse into the process interesting.

While working on this painting I received an email from a friend informing me that his beloved dog had very suddenly died. Having seen them just a few days prior, I was quite surprised. I felt moved by his loss and did this small watercolor impression of his shepherd, Hank, and gave it to him the next day.

As many of you know, we will not be going to Nova Scotia this summer. Although we are disappointed that we'll not be able to see our friends and enjoy the South Shore, we are rediscovering summer in Vermont. After eight years of spending summers in Canada, the rich greens of summer and the peaceful view of the Connecticut River are quite lovely to see again. So if you find yourself coming this way, we'll be here happy to receive you at The Artist's Loft.

Yours,

William H. Hays
