Our building is called the "Amedeo de Angelis/Union Block". The Union Block was probably so named
because it was built just as the Civil War began. Although the street level is very altered, the upper
stories of this Italianate Revival building nearly retain their original appearance. The Italianate Revival
style can be identified by the box-like construction and large cornice. Windows are often grouped
in threes. Though this is not the case here, the small brick arches under the cornice are in
triplicate. In the olden days, the third floor provided an art studio for a well known photographer and
art enthusiast. A colorful cast of characters has followed up our staircase ever since. The large
bronze plaque on the face of the building was erected by Amedeo de Angelis, who owned the
building in the 1920s and '30s. He was an immigrant Italian shoemaker who achieved the "American
Dream" in this country and is said to have erected the $12,000 plaque as a memorial to himself.
