"Every artist has to give this a shot. In my case, I was itching to do a portrait and I was the only one available at the time. My goal in this painting was to avoid the usual intense stare that results from looking directly into a mirror at one's self (for several hours). My studio is chilly in winter, so I put on the coat and hat."
