The First Civil Union "The First Civil Union (An Open Door)"
Oil on Canvas
66" x 35"

"This is, in fact, the first couple to receive a civil union in the United States. The ceremony was performed in Brattleboro, Vermont on July 1, 2000. I came to do their portraits after having seen a picture of them in the local newspaper on Valentine's Day, 2004. I feel that their love for one another transcends the political uproar that surrounds same sex unions in the U.S. The painting is to become part of the permanent collection of the Vermont Statehouse and will be on display in Montpelier beginning in April of 2005. Click here for a detail of the painting."
