Clear Pool, A Dazzling Display
Oct 28, 2026
Hello Friends,
I've been creating landscapes in paintings and prints for more than 50 years. As with the real world, water is an integral part of each attempt to depict these landscapes. The clouds, the rain, rivers and streams, the ocean, weathered rocks and stones and, of course, plants. Water is the central element.
One of the most beautiful things I see is sunlight filtering through clear water and falling on the bed of a stream or the sand of a beach. It shimmers and undulates with the perpetual movement of the water, always changing. But my artwork does not move and change. So I am obliged to find ways to suggest this movement while choosing colors and shapes addressing refraction and reflection. If you've tried to do this, you know it is not spontaneous or simple. I've spent countless hours trying to evoke the effortless beauty that nature displays for us.
The last couple of prints I've done have been looking at a small brook in Vermont. I continued with this print and focussed in closer to the light falling on stones below the surface of the water. I can't tell you how difficult it is to do this by carving a block, putting ink on it and printing on paper. There are so many times in the course of making this print that I thought, "I don't know what I'm supposed to do here." It can be very difficult but I keep thinking I can do it better than I did before. So I persevere and hope for the best!
With this print I decided to lay down colors defining the forms of the stones and the light falling on them, then apply a layer of transparent color over the whole print. Here are the first six of nine impressions ending with that transparent layer of color:

"Clear Pool", impressions one through six
This layer of transparent color pulls everything together to evoke the clear, cold water flowing over everything. I then strengthened the dark areas with one more impression and finished by adding the undulating reflection of the sky and clouds to finish the print.
"Clear Pool", linocut print, 9" x 12"
I'm very pleased with the results in this print but I keep thinking, "I can do this better." So, on to the next print!
I was very pleased to attend the opening reception of the Boston Printmakers Biennial Exhibition at Boston University this past month. My print, "Crystalline Light" was chosen to be included from among nearly two thousand international entries by Esther Adler, Curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was an honor and a pleasure.

My work will also be on display at East End Arts in Riverhead, NY (Long Island) through the middle of December at their national juried show, The Print Continuum. Of course my prints are always on display at the galleries which represent my work around the US. As always, my prints are also available from this website. Thank you so much for your interest and continued support of my work. I always look forward to hearing from you and I wish you all the best in your life.
